Description (last modified by kostko) (diff)

Add GPS serial device support to the routers, so position of a node can be tracked in real time via nodewatcher.

This support would be useful for:

  • Mobile nodes in the case of emergency setup, because locations could be precisely determined and tracked live. Something as APRS, but with wifi mesh.
  • Flying nodes either on a balloon or an airplane.
  • Precise node positioning and link planning.

At the moment I am inquiring with several serial gps device manufacturers to find a low cost and serial port compatible device.

Found and tested a serial GPS receiver globalsat br-355. Works flawlessly via serial interface on the computer.

A circuit with voltage regulator and level shifter MAX3232 has to be constructed, to shift voltage levels to TTL. This could be done by zener diode clamping on the RX, but that does not allow return communication.

The circuit will be developed for wr-741/841-nd routers.

The level shifter could be omitted, but only with further testing. Several people have reported, that they got it working, although it is no officially supported.

The gpsd package can be used to report the location in the network.

Also useful for setting up node-based NTP servers. GPS is a very good source of accurate time!

Have you found any serial gps modules that are cheap and precise?

NavSpark will be my choice as soon as it is completed.

  • Milestone changed from 3.0b to Next milestone

Moving to later because it is not blocking 3.0b release.
